"Drink lots of water!"

Updated: Oct 21, 2018

I can't tell you how many times I have advised people to drink more water. It rolls off the tongue and yet, until recently I did not practice what I preached. For the first 35 years of my life I convinced myself that because I never felt thirsty, I must not need as much water as others but of course this most definitely is not the case. I think it was the 2 litre goal that seemed completely out of reach to me. But my relationship with water changed when I read Dr Rangan Chatterjee's: 'The 4 Pillar Plan' (an amazing book offering simple, science-based advice on healthy living) .

In this book, he suggests that we drink 1.2 Litres of water a day, which translates to 8 medium size glasses, with 2 of these to be consumed before breakfast. When you look at it like that, you only have 6 glasses to fit into the day from breakfast to bedtime..not a lot at all! I also measure mine out before bed so it is at room temperature, which makes it much easier to get down. Adding lemon, orange or ginger can also help.

It sounds boring but water really is up there when we consider the hierarchy of consumption. Drinking more water will help prevent constipation, can help with weight loss, increase energy levels and mental clarity. It will also make your skin look healthier. I found that once I began to drink more, I became more thirsty, destroying my theory about some needing water more than others. We have between 50-75% water in the human body so it makes sense that we need to top up regularly.

Glasses of Water

I have learnt to respect water instead of looking down on it. When we advise our clients to drink lots of water after a reflexology treatment it is to rid the body of toxins by using it to flush them out of the body, leaving in it's place a clearer and more balanced system...what can be cooler than that??!!
